the community. Many of the trees in tree walks and tours are notable because they are among the largest of their species in Colorado – Champion Trees. Colorado Champion Trees are determined by a formula that includes the circumference, height, and crown spread.
Twice yearly, American Forests issues their National Register of Big Trees, in part to foster an interest in and appreciation of the largest and most significant trees in the country. This list of the largest species of trees is updated each year to reflect new nominations from citizens, public and private entities. In addition to the already-Champion status Bristlecone Pine and Singleleaf Ash, our Scotch Pine, Utah Juniper, and co-champion Narrowleaf Cottonwood qualified as national champions this fall. Head to Coloradotrees.org for pictures of all our Champions, or to contact the State Big Tree Coordinator to obtain information on visiting a champion and much more.
There’s also a brand new option for locating our notable trees: the Colorado Tree Coalition tree finder app. It’s now available free in the Google Play Store (for Android), or the Apple app store for iPhone. Just type in “CTC tree finder” or “CTC tree finder” (with no spaces) and download away. Zoom in and out with pinch and drag, select individual trees for details on notability, even view in satellite to see each tree in situ.
This app is v.1, so the Colorado Tree Coalition is already working on big plans for version 2 – please contact them with feedback or bug reports. We at ArborScape hope this turns out to be a fun and informative tool for the CTC and the wider community for many years and congratulate them on its launch.
